The Marylhurst School is an independent, progressive education community located in historic Oregon City. Founded in 1972, we serve 150 children in preschool through eighth grade. We embrace the creativity, questions, and risk-taking of childhood in a supportive, hands-on environment. Marylhurst programs are built on an emergent curriculum, which is a way of planning curriculum based on the student’s interest. To plan an emergent curriculum requires observation, documentation, creative brainstorming, flexibility and patience amongst the teachers.
Our school is built on mindful teaching, respect for the social and emotional life of the child and the understanding that knowledge is seeded through curiosity, experience, and reflection. To that end, we practice an emergent curriculum steeped in a progressive education model.
The Marylhurst School now seeks to purchase a permanent location at 19915 Old Lower River Road in West Linn, to move from its current rental property in Oregon City, summer 2019.
The school community has launched an earnest fundraising effort to raise more than $500,000 to secure the new location, formally New Life Church of West Linn, and for general growth of its programs. School officials have already made a significant financial commitment in an escrow account and submitted a development review application to the city of West Linn Land Use Commission.
From its earliest design as a lab school at Marylhurst University, the school relocated to the historic Barclay building of Oregon City in 1986 as a tenant of the Oregon City School District. In 2012, on the 40th anniversary of its founding, Marylhurst Early Childhood Center expanded into The Marylhurst School with the addition of primary and middle school grades for children throughout the Portland area. In 2015 the school partnered with Oregon City Police Department for temporary lease of the Mt Pleasant Elementary School campus, future site of OCPD Police and Courts Building. Since that time, the Board of Trustees has been working to secure a permanent home for
